Commenting on the theme, Raz Hansrud, Managing Director of Gulf Photo Plus, said: “It is surprising that the visual landscape in the Arab world lacks photographic works that focus on the subject of food and celebrate its importance, especially given the region’s richness and heritage in the field of culture food preparation. The spaces in which we eat are also an essential part of our lives, from farms in the mountains of Sinai and sophisticated hydroponic salons that defy the laws of the desert in Dubai, to the ambience of dining tables in Morocco, seats in cafes in Qatar and the use of car upholstery in Saudi Arabia As dining tables, and even the plastic coasters we use in living rooms. Hence, it can be said that there are countless rich stories that originate from and revolve around food, such as the story of growing a certain crop and watching it grow from planting to consumption.Ī selection of photographs from across the Middle East and North Africa gives the audience a chance to take a closer look at such stories.

The term “living” emphasizes the close connection between life and food and the fact that all human activities and preoccupations must be related to food in one way or another, from farming and harvesting to celebrations, gatherings, decorating traditions, and even periods. Generally, this term refers to staple foods that we eat in our daily meals, such as dates, milk and wheat. The word “living” specifically refers to several types of food that differ in different regions, as it means bread in Egypt, couscous in Algeria, and rice in the Arabian Gulf region. In the Arab world, symbolic expressions link the continuity of life – or existence – to the availability of staple foods, especially bread and rice.

The exhibition will run until 7pm on Friday, November 11, when around 50 photographs – selected from more than 2,000 entries – will be on display, highlighting the region’s food culture, rich heritage and diversity.
